The Executive Committee

Being organized democratically, biannual elections are held in TNS (every even year) where the members can elect the Regent, Ombudsman and the four Members-at-Large. This elected team constitutes the Executive Committee (the ExCom). The positions of Editor, Membership Officer and Financial Officer are appointive positions. The appointing is done by the ExCom usually after the election.

Regent

In the language of the Constitution, the Regent is TNS’ equivalent to a chairman. The Regent is the only Executive Committee member who is entitled to speak for the society.

Current Regent Eric Zimmermann is holding the position since his first election in 2012, having been re-elected in 2014.

Eric lives in North Carolina, USA.

Editor

The Editor is, unsurprisingly, responsible for the timely production and enjoyable content of the society’s journal Vidya.

Current Editor Thorsten Heitzmann is holding the position since his first appointment in 2010, having served as Member-at-Large before.

Thorsten lives near Lucerne, Switzerland.

Ombudsman

The Ombudsman is the independent contact person for members who want to have irregularities in the conduct of the society examined.

Current Ombudsman Ryan Jackson is holding the position since his predecessor resigned and he was appointed. Ryan served as Member-at-Large before.

Ryan lives in Curaçao most of the time.

Membership Officer

The Membership Officer is taking care of the membership applications, has the finger on the pulse of the membership and is generally concerned with getting more people to join.

The Membership Officer answers inquiries from potential new members; assesses Applicants' submitted documents for qualification purposes and qualifies applicants who meet TNS standards; leads TNS's promotional efforts to attract new members, regain lapsed members and retain current members; actively participates in Executive Committee (ExCom) decision making as a member of TNS's leadership team.

Our current Membership Officer is Dave Stubbs, formerly member of the ExCom in the office of MAL.

Financial Officer

The Financial Officer’s tasks probably do not need a lot of explanation. Together with the Regent, he tries to make sure that more money is coming in than going out.

Current Financial Officer Jon Miles is holding the position since his first appointment in 2012. At the same time, Jon has been the Information Officer of TNS since the early 2000s, looking after the website and the electronic payment of renewals and goods via the TNS member pages.

Jon lives near San Diego, USA.

Members-at-Large

Also known as MAL, the position of Member-at-Large is the only one to occur more than once in the ExCom – thus the numbering in the email addresses. But there is no ranking, all MALs listed below have equal rights and generally serve to represent the membership in ExCom decisions.

Member-at-Large Stephen C. Swift

Stephen Swift holds the position of MAL since 2012 and also serves as TNS’ Legal Counsel since 2009.

Stephen lives near Washington, D.C., USA

Member-at-Large Tom Chantler

Tom Chantler is a self-employed IT consultant from the UK who has been creating computer software since the late 1970s, before he started school. Tom’s main areas of interest are security, performance tuning and helping others to learn. Since joining TNS in 2013 he has made a number of very interesting new friends and this has led to his increased involvement in the society. In 2016 he was elected as a Member-at-Large and subsequently appointed Information Officer. Tom lives just outside London with his wife and three children.
